First: I have no idea why this debate is such a big deal to me.
 
                           The conclusions:
                           1. The VMAs speak of problems graver than performance
                           2. There are bad things happening worldwide

       The dangers:
1. Syria is not the only place bad things are happening
2. Small problems become big problems

                         The realities:
                              1. We can fix problems
                              2. We can only fix some problems

If the VMAs were only about raunchiness, I would concede a focus shift.
But it goes deeper.

           What is happening in Syria is a tragedy.
           What is happening in America is also a tragedy.
