Dear Eternal Friend and Confidant,
My heart breaks as I write this letter. But I must share this sad tale with you.
Through recent conversations with men and women I had previously believed to be independent and respectable, it has been brought to my attention that there is a secret to life they’ve not been told.
Yes, their parents and peers have failed them. (What does that say about me, as a peer? How responsible am I?) When young, they were mocked for believing in Saint Nicolas and Tooth Fairy, but are still walking around with childlike confidence in their beliefs, wholly convinced in their moral autonomy.
They still believe in their obligation to hold the same political beliefs as their moral ones.
I know this comes as a shock to you, but I urge you to push through your denial. Much like our ancestors accepted proof of a round earth, and pictures of the Moon’s surface—acceptance is a leaking boat, but it will bring you to shore.
I fear I am not being clear. I am still in shock myself, after meeting those who believe the green plant cannabis to be mind-altering, and therefore immoral. They would sooner see it prohibited than moderated for safe usage!
Or the powder noses who insisted I stop all relations with my betrothed, lest we mistake procreation with fornication. They would sooner sentence more women to death to affirm their moral high ground! They never once considered education as a bloodless alternative. That would surely offend their sensitivities. Educate the harlot? Pah!
Please accept my humblest apologies, as I know this letter is much longer than my previous ones. I simply fear for the future when individual morality is heralded as more important than the safety of those alive in the present.
Do they not know they can abstain from cannabis, while those who partake are kept safe? Do they not know they can abstain from sexuality, while those who partake are empowered to control their own future?
I fear for the future, but will not give up hope.
